Alejo Vidal Quadras, vice president of the European Parliament, declared that the EU was worried about the plan for building a mega-complex in the heart of the Aragonese dessert, as planned with Gran Scala.
In particular Vidal pointed to the lack of natural water sources in such an arrid region as cause for concern and stated that the EU would be investigating whether the project complied with legislative requirements.
However Vidal recognized that the EU was restricted in its powers to intervene only in the event that the development went against an EU directive, and that the authorities with direct contol would be the Arogonese government and the Spanish government.
Since the Arogonese authorities were themselves directly involved in the sourcing of land for the project to go ahead, it can assumed that they will not be looking to create legal problems for the consortium. At the same time, the Spanish government is likely to be in favour of any project that brings such immense investment to boost the economy and increase tourism, itself in decline at present.
